An older friend of mine is having electrical problems with his 2004 Chevrolet Impala with 59,000 miles on it. Once every month or so, the car will not start. It has a new battery. When you turn the key nothing happens, however when you "jump" the battery, it''ll start immediately, and then flawlessly for the next few weeks. Then one day, the problem reappears. The engine won''t even turn over. Some have suggested a faulty ignition switch, others the starter. What''s the best way to determine what''s at the root of the problem?

Jim Paprocki,
I spoke with Romen,a service advisor at Braeger Chevrolet. He felt that the most likely causes for your freinds starting problems are either the ignition switch, the starter, or a problem with the security system in the car, if the vehicle has some type of security system. The best way to get to the exact source of the problem, is to have the car towed to a service center, rather than jump start the vehicle first. It will be easier to diagnose the problem, while the vehicle is not operating properly.Iwould also suggest calling a Chevrolet or other GM Dealersship. The service advisor may have additional questions concerning the problem, that may help in determining the cause of the problem.

I know "regular" oil is usually changed every three months, but how often should you change synthetic blend and synthetic oil?
Francine Yerasha

Francine Yerasha,
Sorry no quick answer.
The recommended interval depends on driving habits and conditions. Any oil used in short trip situations collects moisture that needs to be dealt with. If short trips are not a concern you can go up to 10,000 miles with full synthetic oil, as long as the customer checks the oil level every other gas fill up. New vehicle engines operate at very high temperatures for emissions purposes and will go thru 1 quart of oil every 1200 miles or more because of this. Older vehicles will possibly go through more. Typical engine oil capacities are 4.5 - 6 quarts. If you do the math and you are waiting 10,000 miles between oil changes - you could be in trouble, including negative new car warranty concerns.

RON WOBSCHALL,
Answer: The most common cause of the Check Gauges light coming on is a low fuel condition or a malfunction in the fuel level circuit. Many don’t think of the fuel gauge for some reason and just look at the coolant temp and oil pressure gauges as the culprit. Pay attention to the fuel gauge and see if the light comes on at a similar fuel level. The problem could be in the fuel tank sending unit, wiring or bad ground, or the instrument cluster logic. The easiest way to diagnose this concern is to take the car to an authorized Buick Service Center while the light is on. Do not turn the car off, as this will help the technician to pinpoint the concern with his diagnostic equipment.
